by | Sep 5, 2019

On August 28, the City of Yokohama participated in the BIOCOM Devicefest & Digital Health Conference, a one-day event which took place within the conference area of the beautiful Westin Carlsbad Resort in southern California. The event was hosted by BIOCOM, California’s leading support organization for the life science industry, which the City of Yokohama has held strong ties with for years.

This was the 12th meeting of the annually-held Devicefest Conference, and this year’s theme was “The Product Life Cycle.” Filled with panel discussions, keynote speeches, and networking opportunities, the conference is designed to explore the convergence of digital health and the medical device, with this year’s meeting additionally focused on highlighting the process of creating a product, and exploring that process from creation to reimbursement. The keynote speaker for this year’s event was John Dobak, M.D., CEO of DermTech, who shared insights from his company’s experience in bringing their innovative non-invasive skin genomics platform and product for the early detection of melanoma to the market.

The conference opened with remarks from BIOCOM President and CEO Joseph Panetta, during which Takumi Hayashi, the Director General of the City of Yokohama Economic Affairs Bureau, was invited on stage as a guest of honor to give a speech. Mr. Hayashi introduced the City of Yokohama to the attendees, highlighting Yokohama’s support of the biotech and life science industries and its close connections with BIOCOM. After the opening remarks had concluded, the delegation from the City of Yokohama and its Representative to the Americas Office had the chance to meet with Mr. Panetta, alongside representatives from JETRO San Francisco, to discuss future collaboration between BIOCOM and Yokohama.

2019 marks the third year since the City of Yokohama and BIOCOM signed an ongoing MOU to work together to grow their regions’ life science clusters, and the 62nd year of sister city relations between Yokohama and San Diego. The City of Yokohama looks forward to continued partnership and cooperation with BIOCOM and San Diego.
