The City of Yokohama conducted a series of training sessions supporting the formulation of a master plan for comprehensive sewerage system development in the Philippines as part of JICA’s Knowledge Co-Creation Program. From July 6 to July 17, 2026, eight officials from the Philippine national government, local governments, and related organizations participated in a two-week program focused on sewerage management and operations.
Participants visited the Hokubu No. 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Hokubu Sludge Treatment Plant, where they learned about wastewater treatment processes, sludge resource recovery technologies, and facility management practices. Trainees gained first-hand knowledge of how Yokohama operates and maintains large-scale sewerage infrastructure through site tours and technical briefings. They observed microorganisms used in the activated sludge process under a microscope, compared influent wastewater with treated effluent, and learned about the structure and function of digestion tanks.
The program also included field visits to sewer pipeline cleaning operations and a stormwater trunk sewer construction project in the city. Technical experts introduced the project overview and construction progress, while participants viewed time-lapse footage showing shield machine operations, toured the construction site, and observed demonstrations of sewer inspection and cleaning technologies. These activities broadened participants’ understanding of sewer network maintenance, infrastructure development, and project management.
To support human resource development in the sewerage sector in the Philippines, the City of Yokohama conducts practical training programs utilizing operational wastewater treatment facilities. This helps participants enhance their technical expertise and operational management capabilities while sharing Yokohama’s advanced sewerage technologies and know-how with the international community through experiential learning programs that provide integrated training on both wastewater treatment and sludge resource recovery.
In addition, to contribute to the further improvement of sewerage services worldwide, Yokohama welcomes study visits from overseas, including organizations such as JICA and government agencies.
