The Yokohama Europe Office received an invitation from its sister-port city, Hamburg, Germany, and participated in “WindEnergy Hamburg,” one of the world’s largest wind energy trade shows, which was held from September 22 to 25, 2026.
The relationship between Yokohama and Hamburg
Since signing a sister-port agreement on October 27, 1992, the Port of Yokohama and the Port of Hamburg have built a multifaceted relationship of friendship spanning more than 30 years.
The Port of Yokohama, one of Japan’s leading international ports, and the Port of Hamburg—Germany’s largest trade port and known as the “Gateway to Germany”—have been deepening their ties in the areas of port operations and urban management. Building on the long-standing relationship of trust between the two ports, this visit marked an important milestone in paving the way for new cooperation in the next generation of environmental and energy sectors.
Green sectors expected to grow
Held under the theme “The Future of Global Offshore Wind Power and Green Ports: A Path to Decarbonization Through Japan-Germany Collaboration,” this conference provided a crucial opportunity to view wind power—in light of the expanding renewable energy market—not merely as an energy policy issue, but as a growth sector that integrates port infrastructure, supply chain resilience, industrial technology, and economic security.
During the conference, speakers including the Director-General for Energy Security and International Relations at the European Commission and a State Secretary from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action took the stage and offered recommendations on energy security and ensuring resilience.
Toward further collaboration
The Yokohama Europe Office participated in this event at the invitation of its sister-port city, Hamburg, and engaged in a lively exchange of views with key figures from major local organizations.
The office presented an overview of “GREEN×EXPO 2027,” the “Asia-Pacific Circular City Forum,” and the “CIR-BAY International Circular Economy Expo,” and invited Hamburg and local companies to participate.
