On September 7, Todd Gloria, Mayor of San Diego, Yokohama’s sister city in the United States, visited Yokohama. This marked the first visit by a San Diego mayor to Yokohama since 1994, a span of 32 years.

Signing of a Joint Statement

Since establishing Yokohama’s first sister city partnership in 1957, Yokohama and San Diego have fostered a strong friendship centered on people-to-people exchanges.

With the 70th anniversary of the partnership approaching in 2027, the two cities reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in areas including economic development, the promotion of a circular economy, and the development of future generations. Recognizing the growing importance of intercity collaboration in addressing global urban challenges, the two cities signed a Joint Statement to further advance their partnership.

Address to the Yokohama City Council

Mayor Gloria attended a welcome ceremony hosted by the Yokohama City Council and delivered an address in the council chamber. During his speech, he emphasized the importance of partnership, stating that the strongest international relationships are not built solely between governments. They are built between people.

He also expressed his hopes for the continued growth of the friendship between the two cities, presenting Yokohama with the Key to the City of San Diego and sharing the message “May it serve as a reminder that San Diego’s door will always be open to the people of Yokohama.”

Briefing for the Trade Mission

The San Diego Trade Mission, consisting of approximately 40 participants, attended briefings on Yokohama’s global city strategy and the role of local assembly members. Participants deepened their understanding of the history of sister city exchanges, Yokohama’s international initiatives, and differences between the local legislative systems of Japan and the United States.

Economic Seminar

The Trade Mission also visited Minatomirai Research Center, KYOCERA Corporation, where participants received presentations on KYOCERA’s business activities and technological innovations, as well as an introduction to Yokohama’s business environment by the City of Yokohama. The seminar also provided an opportunity for business representatives from both cities to exchange views.

The event served as a catalyst for strengthening economic cooperation between the two cities, particularly in areas such as innovation and investment promotion.

Looking Ahead

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for Yokohama and San Diego to reaffirm the trust and friendship they have built over many decades, as they prepare to celebrate the 70th anniversary of their sister city partnership in 2027.

Moving forward, the two cities will continue to strengthen their partnership through enhanced cooperation and ensure that the bonds between them are passed on to future generations.
