On March 4, 2026, the Port and Harbor Bureau of the City of Yokohama delivered a lecture to professors and students from the National University of Kaohsiung in Taiwan on current and future initiatives to establish a carbon-neutral port in Yokohama.
This lecture was held as part of the program “Environmental and Urban Policy in Port Cities and the Reconstruction of Historic Urban Spaces,” organized by Yokohama City University in collaboration with the National University of Kaohsiung, as part of the JST Sakura Science Program.
Under the theme “Carbon Neutral Port Initiatives of the Port of Yokohama,” the lecture provided a practical explanation of policies for waterfront areas, including Yokohama’s carbon-neutral port plan, the establishment of a supply system for next-generation marine fuels, and a vision for a port that utilizes offshore wind power and battery tankers. The lecture was conducted in English, which made the content more accessible for international students. This exchange with professors and students was a valuable opportunity to further deepen the partnership between Yokohama and Kaohsiung, both of which share the commonality of having developed as port cities.
The JST Sakura Science Program is an initiative implemented by JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) that invites young people from around the world, primarily from Asia, including high school students, graduate students, and early-career researchers, to Japan for short-term stays or online exchanges to experience cutting-edge science, technology, and culture.
