Anime NYC, America’s largest city’s showcase of the best of Japanese pop culture, took place November 18-20, 2022 at the Javits Convention Center. The 300,000 square foot exhibition hall hosted over 200 exhibitors/companies and various other exhibits such as artists, merchandising and ITA-SHA—vehicles that have been decorated by coating, paint, or decals depicting characters or manufacturer’s logos related to manga, anime, games, etc. On Friday, the first day of the event, a large number of fans were lining up even before the doors opened, and it was such a great success and popular event that it took some fans upwards of an hour to enter.
Due to the large number of fans visiting, the organizers limited the total number of tickets sold in advance only to approximately 50,000 and regulated one-day ticket sales so as to not pass 19,500 admissions per day. This year’s badge cap was 4,500 for 3 day passes, 14,600 for Friday, 14,600 for Saturday, and 14,600 for Sunday. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday were already sold out at least a month in advance.
About 200 companies from Japan, including major publishers, anime production companies, and companies in related industries, exhibited at Anime NYC 2022. Gundam, which has existing connections to Yokohama City, had a large booth called “GUNDAM EXPO USA 2022” and was crowded with many fans. Anime NYC hosted over 100 hours of panels, screenings and special events, featuring guests from the US and Japan, manga and anime publishers, premiere screenings and talks by fellow fans.
As with other related events, many cosplayers attended the convention, making the convention even more exciting for other fans, and most importantly of all, enjoying themselves.
