Tokyo and Yokohama are respectively the first and second largest cities in Japan by population. Recent strategic development of the startup ecosystem in Yokohama has helped the Tokyo-Yokohama Area to maintain and improve its current ranking globally over the last two years. 2022 is also the first year that Yokohama has been included by name in the ranking alongside Tokyo, which reflects its strong contribution to the area’s startup ecosystem. A special case study on Yokohama, included in the 2022 Global Startup Ecosystem Index Report, lists notable startups, coworking spaces, and accelerators, as well as public sector initiatives that the city offers and a list of reasons why companies looking for a location in Japan could prefer Yokohama over central Tokyo or other locations in Japan.

StartupBlink’s Insights on the Tokyo-Yokohama area’s Startup Economy for 2022:

  • Tokyo-Yokohama Area is ranked 1st in Japan in the Index, and 5th in Asia. This ecosystem is 15th in the world, far ahead of 2nd-ranked Osaka which ranked 119th this year.
