Isuzu Motors Limited relocating to Yokohama to join city’s strong automotive industry base

by | Jan 7, 2020

After having just announced last month that 7 global automotive companies established their bases in Yokohama in 2019, we are happy to announce that they will be joined by another. Isuzu Motors will be relocating its headquarters and affiliated companies from Tokyo to the brand-new Yokohama Gate Tower building located in Minato-Mirai District of Yokohama’s bay area by March 2022. The company is a global maker of commercial vehicles and powertrain components.

To facilitate the move, Yokohama City has offered financial incentives, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with other local companies and initiatives in line with the Innovation City Yokohama initiative. The Minato-Mirai District has a high concentration of new office buildings and attractive commercial facilities Isuzu Motors has highly evaluated these factors while deliberating on its relocation, and has shown sympathy with Yokohama City’s efforts for innovation. The company has defined one of its goals in its Mid-term Business Plan as the creation of new business through collaborating with cross-industry partners.

Yokohama city has become a national center for the automotive industry, thanks in large part to the presence of industry giants like Nissan, Mazda, and Panasonic, and international automotive parts manufacturers like Bosch and Adient which feed the supply chain. These companies have invested in cutting-edge R&D which also takes place locally in Yokohama, which has helped spur Yokohama’s culture of innovation. To continue this trend, Yokohama has actively promoted and enabled test pilot programs for innovative automotive tech, such as autonomous vehicles. In addition, the ITOP Yokohama (IoT Open Innovation Partners) network supports inter-corporate collaboration and the flow of new ideas, making for a smooth and beneficial entry for new tech companies.

Yokohama City welcomes and is looking forward to working with Isuzu Motors, as well as all other companies interested in joining the initiative to further innovation in Yokohama.
